The "Destruction" of the Wicked

Does the word translated destruction in the Bible, actually mean "to deprive of life"?
Can the Bible itself give us the true meaning of each word?
Why is the Greek word commonly used for "destruction" used to describe the sheep that was only LOST, waiting to be found?
The same Greek word (translated "destruction" in many cases) is used to describe the "lost" coin, which obviously never was alive. Therefore, that Greek word CANNOT mean "to deprive of life".
How long did the shepherd search for the "lost" sheep? Until probation closed? Until he lost patience and gave up? Or until he FOUND it?
